Budgeting for Pets
Ask anyone who owns a dog or cat, and he/she will likely tell you that the pet is part of the family. Unfortunately, many people take a pet into their home without really considering the cost.
The first expense you’ll have to deal with is the purchase price, which for a registered puppy or kitten can cost several hundred dollars. You can reduce these costs by checking out the Humane Society, Animal Friends or the Animal Rescue League. With dogs and cats, there are additional costs for spaying or neutering, shots, and vet visits. Once you have all the initial costs out of the way, the biggest expense will be food.
Some of the trendier pets to emerge over the past few years are reptiles. In addition to the purchase price of the reptile, there is the cost of the aquarium, heat rocks, heat lamps, special vitamins, and food. Make sure you realize all of the costs associated with owning a pet before you bring one home.
